Discussion led by Village Council President Pro Tempore Gigi Traore
Democracy Day, passed by ORD 2012-49, serves as a response to the 2010 U.S. Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision in Citizens United v Federal Election Commission, which inherently declared corporations as having the same free speech rights as individual people and removing certain campaign finance restrictions.
In recognition of the day, Newburgh Heights hosts an annual public hearing on the topic.
